Margie has performed and taught internationally among some of the most dynamic and respected jazz musicians of our time, including Danilo Perez, John Medeski, Gary Versace, and George Garzone. She now teaches at Cornish College of the Arts.
An imaginative bassist, Margie's improvisations are artful, inventive, and stirring. Ernie Santosuosso of the Boston Globe described her as a "rhythmically propelling" bassist who plays "extraordinarily lyrical solos." Fred Bouchard of Downbeat Magazine characterized her music as "joyous and infectious."
Crossing borders of both geography and time, Margie's compositions reflect deep assimilation of decades of musical investigation. They evince images from the Mekong to the Mississippi Delta, and influences from Charles Mingus to Charles Ives.
Originally trained as a classical bassist, Margie began her career with chamber orchestras in New England. Hearing a recording of John Coltrane was a life changing experience. "The music was so deep and beautiful," she recalls. "I was stunned to realize I had never been exposed to anything like it before. What else had I been missing?!" Coltrane's music ignited within her a spirit of inquiry that catalyzed many journeys to come.
She has studied percussion and dance in Cuba, Carnatic rhythm in South India, Hindustani classical music in Nepal, and eurhythmics at the Centre d'Art Polyphonique in Paris. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from Berklee College of Music, and a Master of Music Performance from the New England Conservatory where her teachers were Miroslav Vitous and Dave Holland.
Margie has performed throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Central America, and the United States. She composes for her own group as well as films, theater, dance, and string quartets. Margie’s artistic spirit has continued to lead her to rich learning experiences. She has recently begun making movies.
Deeply grateful to have had so many opportunities for delving thoroughly into the arts, Margie is dedicated to extending her knowledge to others. She taught at Berklee College of Music for a decade, and has presented master classes around the globe, including at Dartmouth College, the University of Costa Rica, Goddard College, Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory, and Scuola di Musica Moderna in Ferrara, Italy. She currently teaches music theory, aural skills, and rhythm at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
